Dr.
George W. Truett  Dr. George W. Truett

Born on May 6, 1867 on a farm in the mountains of North Carolina, George Washington Truett became one of the most influential pastors in the first half of the 20th Century.
In 1987, at the age of 30, he became pastor of the First Baptist Church of Dallas, Texas. He had wanted to turn it down, but felt God was saying, "take it." During his 47 years of leadership, the church grew from 715 members to over 7,000. Even after it was remodeled, a thousand people might be turned away from the doors on a given Sunday. First Baptist Dallas had the largest membership in the world at that time, and was highly influential.

Truett almost left the pulpit once, due to his accidentally shooting one of his closest friends, the Dallas Chief of Police, in a hunting accident, whereupon the Chief died. Praying and crying, he could not bring himself to preach again, until in a vision he saw Christ saying "You are my man from now on." When he returned to the pulpit, all of the other churches in Dallas closed their doors so that their members could go hear him preach.

His ministry in Dallas, and the few recordings available of him, demonstrate what God will do with someone - anyone - who gives their life totally to him. He died in 1944 after a painful illness.

MESSAGES BY DR. GEORGE W. TRUETT -

Note: The audio recording facilities of Truett's day were primitive by today's standards. As a result, they contained a lot of surface noise and many of them, when played back on modern equipment, are too fast, resulting in a higher pitch and speed of Dr. Truett's voice. With the help of Mrs. Dorothy Ivey, a longtime member of First Baptist Dallas who was an adult during Dr. Truett's pastorate and remembers his voice very well,, we have been able to adjust these recordings to match what he really sounded like. We are indebted to Mrs. Ivey for, without her, this would not have been possible.
